You need to replace the master boot record. Boot your computer with your XP startup disk and go into rescue mode. You want to access the command line interface. At the prompt, type "FDISK /MBR" (without quotes). This will replace your master boot record.

That does NOT work on XP (and possibly Win2K). It will only work on Win95/98/ME. For XP, it's much more convoluted...


This MS KB article, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315679&Product=winxp, says "WARNING: Do not use the fdisk /mbr command from the Windows Me/98 Startup disk or the fixmbr command in the Windows XP Recovery Console. These commands will destroy your drive overlay Master Boot Record information..."

You need to use the Recovery Console to access the tools to fix this. This article, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314058, explains how to get there and has details on the commands available.
