I came from Mandrake 9.1 and I tell ya, Gentoo Rocks! It's worth every effort 
to get in there and leanr it. Their guides are pretty straight forward to 
follow and understand, and that in my book is better than most distros I've 
used.

Portage handles all the security patches and the whole lot. Advantages of 
being source base is obviuosly performance, but I also think it's that you 
actually have SW available faster to you (as most project release in source).

Portage is what got me interested in gentoo. It basically allows you to manage 
your SW install, and resolves dependencies for you.
