yes, if you have a reasonably fast machine & broadband,
do a Stage 3 install & follow instructions, Gentoo is as easy as Mandrake.

to get any daemon running, first emerge the package,
then eg 'rc-update add cupsd default';
you can start it w/o rebooting by '/etc/init.d/cupsd start'.
there's a good Gentoo printing doc.

generally, Gentoo is easier to manage than binary distros,
as it sets things up elegantly & leaves the user with real control:
it tries to avoid making assumptions on the user's behalf.
it's a good idea to browse thro'  /etc  to see how Gentoo does things.
