I ran into random lockup issues with vmware when I had compiled my kern
modules with a different version of gcc than my kernel. It throws an error
and you have to force the config to proceed if this is the case - for good
reason.

1. Just run /opt/vmware/bin/vmware-config.pl and pay special attention to any
warnings it might give. It will rebuild the kern modules. (Must do this as
root!!!)
2. Run /etc/init.d/vmware restart (just for kicks)
3. Try vmware as a user - run from an xterm. Pay special attention to any
strange errors.
