Oups, crazy. It seems that your drive is * NOT * a Matshita DVD-ROM SR-8176. But is recognized as one... Could you do a

# dmesg

And look at beginning of what it returns, what is said about your driver (you will also see a line for your hard disk) ? Is it * really * a Matshita... ? You maybe know the model ?

I don't know if it is possible to tell the kernel that your CD is actualy a Writer...
