I had some issues with logging in using gdm after I created an own
partition for /tmp and just forgetting to set the x bit on the directory.
(Never will forget that again, it took me around 2 days to figure it out ;) )
Perhaps something like this happened?
Another advice would be to kill gdm ( /etc/init.d/xdm stop as root),
to login to your user on the console an try to do a "startx". Perhaps
you have to append the window manager you used in gdm if it is not the
default window manager. But you might see why your wm isn't working any
more, as it should give you an error message on the console if x terminates.
Just some random thoughts about this ;)
