That's a good idea. I haven't done it yet for this installation, but 
previously I moved all the fonts into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype and 
then symlinked the /opt/.../truetype dir. Now that I've got fonts.conf 
working, your way seems much cleaner.
