I have tried everything I know how and just can't get either KDM or X to start
up anymore.

Here is what I have tried...

1. Changing the /etc/X11/XF86Config monitor driver manually by editiing the
file and rebooting.
2. Attempting to run KDM from a terminal prompt.
3. Attempting to run X through "startx" command from a terminal prompt.
4. Making sure that KDM is properly listed in my rc.conf file (it is).
5. Looking my log files to see if they might give me some ideas.

None of the above have helped me solve this. Gentoo boots up normally but it
never goes into KDM successfully. It tries but after the screen flickering
on and off a few times I am returned to a command interface login prompt. No
KDE. No KDM. No X windows.

About the only thing that I did unusual wise since the last reboot a week or
so ago was to change the monitor driver. It's been working fine since I did
that a few days and had to relog in (though not reboot).

Can someone please give me some direction as to what I should do. I am at the
end of my rope and don't really know what to do.

Unfortunately I overwrote the backup of the /etc directory that I had a few
days ago when it seemed that everything was working okay and that it was time
to backup my system. So I can't revert to the way it was before my last
emerge sync and emerge -u system.

But like I said I haven't had any real problems until now when I felt a need
to reboot (for what seems to have been an unrelated inability to run
MozillaThunderbird from the command line).

Should I post my XFConfig86 file and maybe some messages from my logs?

Anyone?

Thanks.
