I lost the previous emails somehow (something got confused between going back
and forth between RedHat and a Gentoo command prompt) so please bear with me
if some of this doesn't make sense.

I tried the

"Protocol" "PS/2"
"Device" "/dev/mouse"
"ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Doesn't work. Same problem.

I also tried copying over the mouse section of the XF86Config running well
under RedHat. Again same problem.

I also tried running XF86Config -configure and overwriting the normal
/etc/X11/XF86Config with the new one created by XF86Config -configure. Same
problem.

The problem seems to be not the statements in the mouse section of my
XF86Config file but rather that there is no /dev/mouse to begin with. All
the right modules seem to be loaded at least as far as "lsmod -l" reports.

How does the /dev/mouse link get created? I believe it is created by the
mouse module but that is loaded already. Why is the /dev/mouse link not
showing up?

cat /dev/mouse doesn't work to test the mouse. The /dev/mouse link is just
not there. I even tried creating the link inside the /proc directory through
"ls -l /dev/mouse /dev/psaux" successfully creating the link but still the
same problem. Gentoo just doesn't recognize my link or just doesn't create
it. I don't which one it is.

Any further ideas or input? I hope all this does not come down to
reinstalling Gentoo. That would be an absolute pain.

Thanks.

Carlos
