You can do that, backwards, yes.  But it requires a lot of work. 
Athlon-xp can make for i686, athlon, i586  and so on, but not for
pentium3/4.

the basic idea is :  unpack stage3, prepare install , chroot, fix USE
flags, start building GRP packages, save packages and then wipe the
chroot.  Start over again for the next set.
