We all started as n00bs. Time is not wasted when you ask questions and learn rather than just whining. Just remember to share your knowledge with others.
As you have noted from this interchange, gentoo and its documentation is not 100% perfect, but people are willing to listen.
I don't really know what failed before, when the kernel wouldn't boot, but after doing:
genkernel --config
and that procedure was finished, it worked.
