Sounds to me, that your kernel told you that there was a kernel panic
because it could not mount the specified root partition. In that case I
would suggest to boot the gentoo live cd an to do an fsck on your root
partition. I had some similar issues with reiserfs on my root partition
and in my case it was a corrupt filesystem that caused the problem. Hope
