First, obsolete means not, that it will disappear suddenly. There were 
functions obsolete for whole 2.2 and 2.4 series.

Martin Schlemmer AFAIR answered to one of the devfs threads, saying that 
gentoo will transist to udev, when it becomes a working replacement.

So, don't be afraid. devfs will stay for a long time and when it will be 
replaced, the replacement will be a much less error prone.
