*) Don't compile in SMP support (multiple CPU support)
*) Use Real mode mode power off method
*) apmd is NOT necessary
*) try halt -p(oweroff)
*) Check "Enable PM at boot time" (maybe not necessary)

This works for me. (gentoo-2.4.22-r2, i815 board)
