hi, i had this problem with kdm, are you using it? i don't really understand why doesn't it work, it's something like that it doesn't source the /etc/profile (i think you can specify it somehow in XSession file). i was too lazy to edit the XSession (or maybe it didn't work, I'm not sure now), i've just copied the contents of /etc/profile to .bash_profile. hope this helps, there's something in the gentoo forums about it (search for kdm).
