I issued FIXMBR in de recovery console of WINXP, xp still boots ok, but the
1.4RC bootcd still has problems,

are there some other tools to check MBR of correct 'format', my guess is
that winXP is doing something 'funny' which is not recognized by the linux
scripts.

Is there any way I can see an error message?

Is there any way I can read out the MBR?

other tips...

ps: I have a working gentoo on a desktop from where I can build different
bootcd's (if you guys give me some tips on how to do this ;) )

If you don't have yet installet gentoo on your pc but you still have XP
and it works, then you should boot XP in prompt mode (just jump
continuosly on the F8 key at boot time) and then entere the command
FIXMBR.

I'm not sure about the syntax of the command, you can check it typing
HELP at the prompt.

I hope this helps you.
