You might check your system date (just type date... check the man page 
for how to set it if it's wrong)... I had problems with tar packages not 
working while I was installing cuz my system date kept getting screwed up.

If you have problems while un-tarring the files I'd suggest re-downloading
and burning another copy. I'm not sure, but it seems like corrupt
archives.

The only problem, besides the 36 hours, is that its a gentoo CD from the
store.
