I have the same sound chip on my new mb and it does the same here. I monitor system temp with gkrellm and heat is not the problem (at least not here.)
"After a while"? Is the box getting hot? Might be software but it sounds more like a hardware problem either with the card or box.
I've been trying to pin down the source of this for a while but it eludes me. Whenever this happens I've run top and check to see what is running that might cause this but that has not produced the culprit. If I do figure this out I'll post here.
