I can't seem to edit my KDE menu with kmenuedit.

If I run kmenuedit as my normal user, I can edit items but cannot find a
way to save my edits. The 'apply' button is grayed out. So I assume I
must run it as root? All my attempts are failing:

| su -c kmenuedit
Password:
/bin/bash: line 1: kmenuedit: command not found

| su -c `which kmenuedit`
Password:
Aborting. $HOME is not set.
ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpected.

| export HOME=/home/destiney; su -c `which kmenuedit`
Password:
Aborting. $HOME is not set.
ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpected.

| export HOME=/root; su -c `which kmenuedit`
Password:
Aborting. $HOME is not set.
ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpected.

Any ideas?

TIA..
