Portage pretty much takes care of everything you need when installing 2.6. You won't need the alsa-driver package anymore. Everything is still configured the same way (modify /etc/modules.d/alsa, modules- update, rc-update add alsasound boot). One thing to remember is that your modules names should be placed in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel- 2.6 when you want them to automatically load at startup. Also, to compile the kernel, you only have to type "make bzImage modules modules_install".
Other than that, though, its a very easy transition. Good luck with it.
