Thanks for your replies. got postfix installed, but I am not able to 
send mail. It works for email adresses with the same domain name, but 
not outside. I have started postfix with
# postfix start

Acording the Gentoo Linux Desktop Configuration Guide, "If you only 
intend to use your mail server for sending mail, then postfix is already 
set up for you"?
What am I missing?

Looks safe. Incidentally, that's what I had to do. Postfix has been
working great for me.
