Maybe it's because I'm not a gamer, but the 2.4.x to 2.5.x (yes I've
been on 2.5/2.6 a long time) was the simplest transition I ever made. 
If I had known about the kernel changing the defaults to "no terminal
support" in advance, it would have been error free.

No experience like this, but I only switch between X and alternate
terminals without any errors.
