You gain backups. if you fex. was bitten by an update, or found
something that didnt work as expected in an application you've updated,
You could easily install the binary and compare. If for some reason you
suffer file corruption in /usr, you could easily (unless .tbz2's are
corrupt too) recover with either use of tar or emerge on the binary.
