I was eventually able to set up lm-sensors on my computer by compiling
every available sensor chip as a module, and running sensors-detect.  The
output of that with an 'lsmod' to see the running modules told me what I
need.

Unfortunately, the sensors chip is one of the few things 'lshw' does not
detect.
