You have to have a high memory capacble kernel, ie the kernel has to be 
compiled with high memory set to 4gb in your case.

Turn off acpi if running. also run memtest86 and check your ram.

Here is the culprit.

If you run a machine with 1gb of ram then you need the high memory enabled 
kernel.
