Either that, or you kernel is not configured to use that memory. The confusing thing is that the help text that menuconfig provides says:
make menuconfig -> processor type and features -> High Memory Support

why kernel is saying that it will use only 896 MB RAM, when I have 1GB?!?! (see below)
I bet you have a motherboard with on-board graphics, and it's taking 1024 - 896 = 128 MB of RAM off the top for its use.

"If you are compiling a kernel which will never run on a machine with more than 1 Gigabyte total physical RAM, answer "off" here"
Well, I have 1gig, not MORE than 1 gig. So, I left it off, although there is room for interpretation.
Help under the 4gb option:
"Select this if you have a 32-bit processor and between 1 and 4 gigabytes of physical RAM."
Well, I don't have BETWEEN 1 and 4 gig... :)
So, the help text available when configuring the kernel isn't helpful. I will now compile with HIGHMEM4G as suggested above.
Funny, I never noticed the boot message that recommended enabling high mem :)
Cheers, Kevin
