I had similar symptoms for a while but it seems to have stopped happening. The most successful way of fixing it was to ssh in from another computer, su to root and viciously kill X, using the -9 option if necessary.
I, unfortunately, can't do that, since this is my only working computer. I'm pretty sure the evil ol' Windows XP-running Dell has a failing hard drive, so I'm afraid to boot it, even through Knoppix.
Meh. I can usually time hitting the reset button right so nothing is being written to the hard drive or anything...
