linuxrc is going to be on the initrd; so it will be /linuxrc 
not /boot/linuxrc.

Although, I'm using an initrd (+ linuxrc) and I'm not passing that option 
(nor ramdisk nor [I think] real_root -- I simply point root 
at /dev/vga/lv0).

I wouldn't mess with it at this point.  It seems like you aren't even 
getting to the GRUB menu, which means this file has not relevance.
