OK, but if you didn't have XFree (or X.Org, presumably), you weren't running X...? Or what are you actually saying?

You were running X apps via the framebuffer? You were running X.org without a config file? You were running CLI only?

I'm not getting it. In any case, Tony does have a config file; it's just in the / base for some reason, despite this path not actually being on the search path for the config file as posted earlier.

So while I may be wrong, it does seem that X.org is going out of its way to find a config file (also supported by the fact that there are so many search paths for said file), which strongly suggests that one is urgently necessary.

But that's all, before somebody gets all P.O.'d again that we're discussing theory rather than the actual problem ;-) .
