Cheryl, if you have a working kernel it is quite possible to use the kernel configuration for building a kernel for your target gentoo system. More likely, however, is that the brltty maintainer will give you a list of settings that need to be defined in your kernel config. You'll just need to make sure you implement all of these settings.
