I've been unable to get alsa working satisfactorily with several of my sound cards (Audigy LS in particular). I've solved this by installing the commercial OSS driver (which is free for personal use with a few minor restrictions). I've been unable to get midi working with this setup in KDE. I can get midi sound playing with "timidity -ig -OR" which outputs sound to arts, but have been unable to get applications like kmid to work (I get Player :: There are no midi ports !).
