Well, Neil did say that he felt that was too much information (he only wants the notification for packages he has installed, not for ones he doesn't). I'd like to mention, though, that having the full output can disclose some handy apps that one didn't know about but would find useful to install. The script is a little overkill IMO. I just have a daily cron job that runs
esync --nocolor --nospinner
The output of esync will be mailed to you (assuming you have a MTA setup, of
course). If you're not familiar with esync output, it lists all the packages
that have been updated since your last sync. Those packages for which updates
are available have a "U" (like emerge) next to them.

Neil's needs may be specific, of course, but discounting the very neat and well-organized output of esync (or any program) on the basis of 'too *much* information' (as if that's possible) raises an orange flag for me on general principle :-) .
