esync --nocolor --nospinner

The output of esync will be mailed to you (assuming you have a MTA setup, of
course). If you're not familiar with esync output, it lists all the packages
that have been updated since your last sync. Those packages for which updates
are available have a "U" (like emerge) next to them.

Well, Neil did say that he felt that was too much information (he only wants the notification for packages he has installed, not for ones he doesn't). I'd like to mention, though, that having the full output can disclose some handy apps that one didn't know about but would find useful to install. It's happened to me several times that I was checking the updated programs list (either via esync or on packages.gentoo.org, and investigated an application with an interesting name, and found something I wanted.

Neil's needs may be specific, of course, but discounting the very neat and well-organized output of esync (or any program) on the basis of 'too *much* information' (as if that's possible) raises an orange flag for me on general principle :-) .
