[gentoo-user] surround sound on via8237

Has anybody had any luck getting more than 2 channels out of the above 
southbridge?

My system:
Athlon64 3000+
Asus k8v se deluxe (via8237 southbridge + AD1980 codec)
kernel 2.6.9-r14 (using gentoo-dev-sources for amd64)
via82xx alsa driver
IceWM (no KDE/Gnome)
Stereo sound is ok, but I can't get surround channels to work. 
Electrical connections and volumes are ok, because if I select "Spread 
front to surround" or "Exchange front/surround" from alsamixer I get 
(front) sound from surround speakers.

I've tried the alsa included in the kernel, and the more recent 
alsa-driver 1.0.7, no difference.

I've tested it with
$ mplayer -channels 4 (or 6) dvd://1
$ aplay -D surround41 file.wav
Any hint would be greatly appreciated, I ruined my fingertips googling 
for an answer...
