The whole system, or just the Gnome desktop? Can you still kill X11 by
pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or switch to a text console?

If the whole system is affected, a filesystems probing routine could hang.
If so, do you have some "strange" filesystems compiled in your kernel?
Check the output of " grep -v nodev /proc/filesystems " ? The filesystems
apperar in the order in which they are probed.
