Two things: 

1) Drop uw-imap like a hot potato and run dovecot or courier-imap instead 
(you'll thank me later). Dovecot can use mbox format, courier uses Maildir.
UW-imap is not only slow, but is widely regarded as one of the worse imap 
servers out there, if I'm allowed to be just blunt.

2) In such cases, running 'netstat -an' can be helpful in determining what's 
[not] listening to the network on your box.
