You mention booting *WITHOUT* that drive in there. I assume you have
another drive that you boot from. Before blowing away the hard drive,
check the jumpers to make sure that its set to "slave" and that your
other boot drive is set to "master". CS ("cable select") is a 3rd
option setting you may sometimes see. It works under Windows, but may
have problems under linux.
