Errr, OK, I'm just on holidays so I have no access to the machine, but I'd bet that there was no fstab at all as I tried to check it out. Maybe its existance depends on any environment parameters?
Under Jaguar it used to contain comments along the lines of "this is unused, except during the boot process. don't modify it, but don't bother using it, either". The Panther /etc/fstab/ is more terse, but I'm sure the situation is the same. I think this is why jnichols said ":P" in his post.
