Sometimes the boot sequence will make assumptions about the hardware that
create problems.  When all else fails, I try to turn off support for
framebuffer, dma, apic, etc.  I also turn off hardware I know I don't have
or won't need (pcmcia, usb, etc.).

That being said, when you get the 'boot:' prompt, type in some variation of:

boot: gentoo-nofb ide=nodma nousb noapic nofirewire
