I ran what you suggested, and iwconfig now returns:

IEEE 80211g  ESSID: "Arachne" Nickname: "Arachne"
Mode: Managed  Frequency:2.462 GHz  Access Point: <router mac address>
Bit Rate  . . .  etc

which is a heck of a lot more than I was getting before - at least the ap is 
recognized.  Where I go from here, though, I have no clue.
