X.org uses a configuration file called xorg.conf. It follows the same format as XF86Config. If X.org can't find an xorg.conf it will look for an existing XF86Config and use that. This means that you should be able to "emerge xorg-x11" and everything should be fine and dandy and ready to use (except for a few annoying X.org bugs) without any further configuration.
