My understanding is that a typical network windows network runs netbios
on top of TCP/IP, so anytime you are accessing windows/samba file or
printer services, you are 'running' netbios. At least it seems that if
I disable "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in Windows XP, I can no longer access
network file or print services.
Also, from the smb.conf man page:
You need to set up Samba to point to a WINS server if you
have multiple subnets and wish cross-subnet browsing to work cor-
rectly.
The particular network I had trouble with used multiple subnets, and the
main windows file servers were not listed in DNS, only in WINS.
