Also from one response: "Put the drives on separate channels." Why? I want to use all three for Gentoo if possible.
My mentioning it was more of a pointer for you to think about which drives you were going to be using most often rather than /dev/hd? ascetics. If you have the two heavily used drives on the same IDE channel you'll see some slow downs on your I/O.
