You didn't mention what graphics chip you are using, but you should start with making sure that DRI is enabled and working. Also if you are using the ATI or NVidia drivers, make sure you have the latest version. And finally make sure that opengl-update is pointing to the correct opengl libraries. I had hanging and crashing problems with my ATI Mobility 9600, and was never able to resolve them.
