Sounds like something to do more with baselayout than with the kernel. The big question is can you still start up your networking by hand. IE: ifconfig eth0 <ip address> route add default gw <ip address of your router> If this doesn't work see if your network card module is loaded. If it does work does /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start work? If not, check /etc/conf.d/net and /etc/conf.d/rc as suggested elsewhere.
