I think the development federation enabled by git is starting to effect this more. For example, my VFD display driver that used to come from lirc is now in the kernel source tree. Many lm_sensors drivers are now in the kernel tree, Even VMware guest drivers are now in the kernel tree. So the potential for clashes is minimizing.
