Without being particularly effective in reading other persons' minds (from a 
distance) and you not posting *exactly* what the error was, I can only stand 
back in amazement and admire your conclusions!  o_O

We don't know what the installation script does.  This may be useful.

Either way, to convert an rpm package into tar.gz you can emerge:

  app-arch/rpm2targz

It may work, but without an ebuild already in portage you may need to do some 
of the heavy lifting in finding out what is required to install and run.
