I tried that, and I thought it hadn't worked because when I rebooted I still had no sound. But then, when I decided to reboot again with the old kernel to see if I'd now lost my working sound device, I heard the KDE shutdown bong. So I've rebooted the new kernel and all is well. Meanwhile I had fiddled with alsactl, issuing various commands blindly. Maybe that's what fixed it. Many thanks for your help Mick. -- Regards, Peter
