Look through Dmesg carefully for some clues.

You may also what to take an older bootable *linux cd/dvd
image and boot that works and gives you a working X environment.
Then go and look at how it is setup  for this chipset/distro.

You may have to use something that is i386/486/586 vintage,
to find what will make it work.
