Grant E.'s existing script purportedly functions just fine for non-encrypted SMTP connections. The problem is with encrypted SMTP connections. Further the problem is in the SMTP side, not the actual mailer / transport side.

Sendmail / exim / postfix / etc should all be able to provide the unencrypted and encrypted SMTP side with very little problem at all.
