I see, with uname -r, however, that this is the first gentoo system I
have that's a version 5 kernel:

5.4.66-gentoo-x86_64

I just found this in Xorg.0.log:

/[    37.362] (II) vboxvideo: kernel driver found, not loading./
This has been discussed before on  this  list  in  2017.   Have you
tried  the
(admittedly counter-intuitive)  solution  of  blacklisting vboxvideo
to  avoid
conflicts with the kernel frame buffer? [1]

         $ echo 'blacklist vboxvideo' >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

I tried that and it didn't work.   When I looked at the reference, I saw
that he subsequently does a new genkernel...

I guess I could try that.  But I have at least 4 Vbox gentoo
installations (including this one, before I re-installed) and don't have
to blacklist vboxvideo and re-gen the kernel in any other case.
